    One of the author's first writings before he became almost exclusively interested in Roman law of obligations, particularly with the reworking and updating of Frédéric Girard's Manual from 1929 onwards. The author remains, however, attached to a conservative doctrine in the image of that of Paul-Émile Viard (cf. Henry Lévy-Brühl, RIDC, no. April-June/1959, p. 492).
