This richly documented study focuses on two distinctive features of southern France: the use of the Occitan language and the application of Roman law. The author clearly demonstrates the differences—and oppositions—with the Bolognese school. By reproducing two texts (the custom and its commentary) ten years apart, the author shows that legal evolution can be, at least in this case, very rapid. This is also emphasized by Paul Ourliac in his critical bibliography (see Journal des savants, no. 3/1971, p. 213 et seq.), who is full of praise for the quality of this publication.
