This work, which in G. Le Bras's Prolegomena was announced as a single volume on "Contemporary Transformations," has since expanded considerably, resulting in the publication of the present volume, to which will be added volumes XVII and XVIII devoted to Collegial Organizations and Means of Government, as well as the relationship between Church and Society. The present work is divided into several sections. The historical framework is established by René Epp, focusing particularly on the Revolutionary period, the impacts of the Restoration, the influence of the Empires, and also the Church's attempts to adapt since the Third Republic. This is followed by Book One, written by René Metz, which sets forth the sources of [canonical] law and the evolution or revision of the rules, as well as their creation, with significant discussion of the codification effort. Ecclesiastical law (concordat and civil law) also has about ten pages highlighting bibliography and other collections.
