“This work, a doctoral thesis in law from the Faculty of Aix, bears a somewhat misleading title. It presents itself as a study of the law of the high valleys of Provence and Dauphiné. However, in fact, this study is limited to the Hautes-Alpes and a few neighboring valleys: Briançonnais, Embrunais, Gapençais, Champsaur, and the Barcelonnette valley. On the other hand, the work, from another perspective, delivers more than it promises, for the author does not confine himself to pure private law; he addresses the status of persons and the status of land, as well as judicial organization and procedure, all subjects closely related to public law. (…) A work such as MP’s would already have the great advantage of showing that the medieval law of southern France is a highly original customary law, as original as that of northern France.” The more one studies it, the more this observation becomes clear. We are not only talking about feudal matters (...). [One] will find the description of a mass of private law or procedural institutions that Roman law did not know, and several of which disappeared after the revival of Roman law.” (Robert Caillemer, Revue archéologique, historique et philologique de la France méridionale, n° 78/1908, p. 249 et seq.).
