"The Provençal-French dictionary by Simon-Jude Honnorat (1783-1852), a physician from Digne, a learned naturalist and philologist, is considered the first major dictionary of the Occitan language, encompassing all dialects and compiling a large part of modern Occitan writing. While it seems to have had little success upon its publication between 1847 and 1848, it was one of the important sources for Frédéric Mistral's Tresor dóu Felibrige." Above all, the physician and scholar from the Basses-Alpes (now Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) appeared to 20th-century Occitan lexicographers as a pioneer in many areas: for example, he was the first to consider the unity of the Occitan language in a comprehensive lexicography, despite dialectal variations, and through his graphic choices he broke with the adoption of the French system by drawing on etymology, thus foreshadowing the implementation of classical orthography during the 20th century. With S.-J. Honnorat's dictionary, for the first time, a work allowed the language to be grasped in its entirety, and, transcending dialectal variety through the use of a unifying graphic system, he re-established the link, broken for centuries, with the great language of European culture that Occitan had been in the Middle Ages.
