The preface to this book contains one of the finest descriptions of the complex institution of fideicommissary substitutions: “On the one hand, they are the foundation of the most illustrious and valuable houses to the State, since they preserve possessions that perpetuate their splendor and services. On the other hand, they touch upon the freedom and security of commerce, given that they essentially remove assets from it by rendering them inalienable, at least for a time. From these two perspectives, they essentially serve the general interest of society.” This text is the most comprehensive treatise on the subject. The author was a supporter of Maupeau, who, when he established the Superior Councils, appointed him Advocate General to the Superior Council of Blois.
